The Geographer

In this time in which jobs are almost scarce, the good news is if you are a good geographer you will not be trapped by the menace of unemployment. You should keep in mind that as an undergraduate student or a fresh graduate, the university study is based on the following facts;

  • learning about yourself and others,
  • learning to learn,
  • applying knowledge, skills and the ability to learn new topics
  • becoming independent.
Under normal circumstances, geographers tend to have one of the higher rates of graduate employment. According to the Royal Geographic Society in collaboration with the Institute of British Geographers in a survey conducted in 1998 they have mapped the sample of British geographers five years after they had first graduated, the six major career areas geographers were;

  • Administrative and Management
  • Teaching and Lecturing
  • Financial Sector
  • Marketing
  • Research
  • Industry and Manufacturing
Professor David Rhind, chief executive Ordnance survey (1991-98) once stated that "Employers rarely need narrow specialists. They need bright, committed, inquisitive and determined individuals with the ability to draw aon what is happening elsewhere in the world. The best geographers are stars in that respect!"
